During a windy snowfall, members of the Markham Fire Department and event emcee Colin Campbell raise the poppy flag to half mast at the 100th anniversary of Armistice and Remembrance Day ceremony at the Markham Theatre. This event is to honour veterans and recognize the 100th anniversary of the armistice agreement Nov. 11, 1918 to end the First World War. Nov 9, 2018. – Steve Somerville/Torstar
Through the Markham District Veterans Association, an initiative has been started to have veterans’ banners in place on Markham Main Street for the 2019 remembrance period.
The banners would be installed in early October and removed in mid-November.
This is a revenue neutral initiative where the cost of the banners would be absorbed by the sponsor and the installation/removal picked up by the City of Markham.
All service personnel, whether they served in the First World War, Second World War, Korea, peacekeeping missions, Afghanistan, or are still in active service, are applicable to be honoured with these banners.
Sponsors can be individuals, families and/or businesses that want to honour a veteran.
With the help of a research group established by MPP Paul Calandra’s office and the Markham Museum, several Markham Second World War veterans have been identified and photos made available.
But it is not restricted to veterans from the Markham area or Second World War service alone.
There are 40 lamp posts with brackets for banners starting from Hwy #7 going north on Markham Main Street. It would be great to have a banner on each lamp post.
The quality is good enough that the banners can be used for three consecutive years over the October/November period.
After the three years, the banners will be returned to the sponsors.
