Markham Veterans Banner Program

Each year, the Markham District Veterans Association continues an initiative to have veterans’ banners displayed on Markham Main Street.  This program has been active since 2019.

This is a revenue neutral initiative where the cost of the banners would be absorbed by the sponsor and the installation/removal picked up by the City of Markham.

All service personnel, whether they served in the First World War, Second World War, Korea, peacekeeping missions, Afghanistan, or are still in active service, are applicable to be honoured with these banners. There is no restriction to veterans from the Markham area or Second World War service alone.

Sponsors can be individuals, families and/or businesses that want to honour a veteran.

The banners are installed in early October and removed in mid-November.
They are displayed prominently on Lamp Posts lining Main Street Markham.

For 2025,
we have 54 lamp posts available with brackets for banners starting from Hwy #7 going north on Markham Main Street to Bullock Drive / Parkway Avenue.
This year we are delighted report a Veteran Banner on every the lamp post on Main Street.  It is a sight.

Anyone interested in honouring a veteran can request a new banner.

Applications are accepted through our MDVA Web site (www.mdva.ca) where sponsors can fill in the online application form and attach a Veteran’s picture.

With a new banner purchase there is an initial design cost with no additional charge for installation for the next three consecutive years.  After the three years, the banners may be returned to the sponsors.

When the banners come down usually sometime after November 11 (following our Remembrance Ceremonies), we check the quality to see if they are good enough for the following year.

Anyone interested is encouraged to contact Jim Dibblee, email: banners@MDVA.ca or
drop into the Markham District Veterans Association Hall at 7 Washington St. after 3:30 pm and ask about our Veteran’s Banner Program.
