Canada played a vital role in D-Day by contributing around 14,000 soldiers to the Juno Beach landings, supported by significant Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) assets, with forces establishing a crucial foothold, clearing mines, providing air cover, and suffering heavy casualties (359 killed) in the fierce fighting that followed.
Canadian troops were essential to the overall invasion force, launching assaults on Juno Beach and engaging in intense battles, including the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion’s actions inland before dawn, making them integral to the liberation of Western Europe.
